Rainloop "Can't connect to server"

Hello,

I have been experiencing some email issues, yesterday I reinstalled Cyberpanel and configured emails, I was able to send and receive emails from Wordpress, Outlook and Rainloop, the email-tester result was 10/10.

Today the issue has returned, I can not connect to mailserver using outlook, also Rainloop returns "Can't connect to server".

I have tried restarting postfix "sudo service postfix restart" however the issue remains.

This has been an ongoing daily occurring issue for me, I don't want to try reissuing SSL as I have been doing so previously because I found the SSL limit gets reached and then I am screwed.

This is my first VPS so I could be missing something very obvious, any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you :)

  • Ok, so I backed up my Letsencrypt/Live folder just in case I hit my SSL limit. I reissued mail server SSL to mail.mydomain.co.uk (the Domain with RDNS record against it) straight after doing so my email is working again.

This is the loop I am stuck in, sorry to sound negative but from my experience I believe tomorrow the same issue will reoccur and again the following day until I hit my SSL limit.

What could be causing this? I really like the Cyberpanel but this really is driving me insane :(
  • Rainloop unable to login can also be caused by dovecot not working correctly.

If you are having problems on a daily basis then something else is causing the issue. I don't see this issue being caused on my CP servers so the question is what else is occurring on your server?

  • @hennaboy thank you for replying.

Im baffled by it, I will try to explain exactly what I have done.

Just to clarify thgough this is happening on my Hostinger 8GB Ram VPS on Centos 7, and also I have an old laptop with Centos 7 + Cyberpanel the issue also occurs on there too.

I have noticed right now if I try to use the Terminal is says it failed to connect to the backend but it was definitely working after a clean install.

I believe all I have done since the clean install is

    1. yum update + yum upgrade
    2. upgrade cyberpanel from git
    3. restore my website using cyberpanel backup created previously
    4. connected to cloudflare api - proxy for @ & www records only
    4. issued SSL to hostname panel.mydomain.co.uk
    5. issued SSL to website mydomain.co.uk
    6. issued SSL to mail.mydomain.co.uk
    7. installed Imagick as flagged in WP health | yum install lsphp74-pecl-imagick
8 installed + enabled CSF following all recommendations for max security score of 65.
    9. changed default SSH port + ensured new port was added to CSF in and out.

Pretty sure thats everything I have done on both servers and the email breaks. Maybe this will narrow it down I really dont know lol :)
  • Did you verify that SSL was correctly installed for the domain?

Check /var/log/ for mail.err or maillog or mail.log

I see nothing in that to break mail so either something is not installing correctly or perhaps something with the image being provided by Hostinger.

Try without cloudflare at all. use the dns on the server for everything see if that changes anything

Also when you try to connect to rainloop immediately in command line check the service

    systemctl status dovecot
    systemctl status postfix

It may point out whats going on.

  • I did, I verified using various SSL checker sites for both primary and email domain.

Thank you for confirming everything I did shouldn't have broken it, being new to Cyberpanel I wasn't sure :)

Regarding the Hostinger image though I used minimal Centos 7 on my laptop and same email + ssl problem reoccurs.

I would rather not disable CF, however in an attempt to fix this I will, let's see how it looks tomorrow if it doesn't break again by then or the next day then that's a very good sign/ or not! lol.

When I see the error again I will try those commands to what the output is.

    Thank you :)
  • Ok so as of today my emails were still working, I just went to email a customer and bam emails are down again. Today I did install and enable Modsecurity nothing else, no rule packs etc..

I dont understand what this means, can anyone help to fix this please
  • Same issue here, and i have installed modsecurity yesterday night too. Tried to deactivate and restart postfix, but not success yet.
  • @maicon1121 sorry to hear you are experiencing this too, but glad it's not just me! lol

Ok, so Issued SSL for mail server, email working once again, however, I have been here before so I expect email to fail again tomorrow and again the next day until I hit the SSL limit then no way to temporarily resolve. Pretty sure before as a workaround I restored a backup copy of the SSL Live folder, this doesn't stop it failing again the next day though.
  • Nice! All you did is issue mailserver SSL and you are now receiving emails correctly?
  • SSL is required to access rainloop

Yes, before issuing mail domain SSL I did disable Modsecurity, so far it has not failed again, will allow a few days to see if it fails again before trying to enable Modsecurity once more, will test Spamassassin afterward as I see other reported Spamassassinn as the cause to email failing also.
  • Modsec shouldnt be affecting your mail server if connecting with external clients. Its possible if you are using mail script programs to send/receive with. In which case you need to discover the false rule and comment it out.

I am connecting to Rainloop using direct login via url also Outlook on Windows and also Outlook + Samsung email On my android.

Honestly, I have no idea why it is breaking, I would assume something packaged with CP would be fully tested and compatible soi I don't understand why so many email issues without modifying any standard settings.

As of today email is still working
  • Well, there is the thing. I install CP and place on domains, WP other sites. Setup email. All works 100%

I don't use Modsec though. I find it to be the most irritating ill-conceived piece of rubbish out there designed by morons sat behind a desk that do no testing in real environments.

  • As of this morning, the email has broken once again, it seems no emails have arrived since yesterday @ 8am, I don't have Modesecurity enabled or spamassasin, really do not know where to go from here, just seem to be going around in circles, unfortunately, I do not have the experience or knowledge to resolve this on my own :(
  • Just to clarify this is just as I speculated, issued mail SSL once again and email connects once more, this must be an SSL issue? Any chance of an admin taking a look please?

Hey Hennaboy. Are you using CSF, the reason I ask is that I have that enabled.

Also regarding Modsecurtiy since installing it I have turned it off from the toggles, is it possible to uninstall it all together and remove any trace of it? I really want to avoid installing CP again this is my 3rd installation already lol.

Thank you also for your time in replying :)
  • CSF yes. I do not like Firewalld

I believe the package in question is ols-modsecurity so you could "potentially" remove it using yum remove but I wouldn't know if it would have any problems.

  • Ok, so did a fresh install without installing Modsecurity, it seems SSL issue may be resolved however this time around I found I could only receive emails and not send them.

I uninstalled CSF and emails were now able to send. All ports required were already added to CSF so not sure of the cause. I reinstalled CSF and emails are still currently working.

I have posted this in case someone else has the same issue, this may be a temporary or long term fix only time will tell.
  • Just to add, maybe CSF has problems with allowing ports as I also found if I changed the SSH port from 22 to 12345 for example and then added the new SSH port 12345 to CSF allow TCP in & out the Terminal does not connect to backend. My point here is maybe the email ports which are added are also not allowed regardless of being added to CSF allow.

For webterminal currently if you change the port then it will not work. This is being looked into.

Webterminal does require SSL to work

CSF not really understanding what you are saying here. Email works but then does not if you enable CSF but if you disable CSF and then enable CSF it works?

  • @hennaboy Thank you for clearing up the Terminal issue for me, I guess we need to wait for update on this issue :)

Regarding email though, yes I was unable to send email at all, I could only receive them this was affected on Outlook and also Rainloop, I disabled CSF and all pending emails were sent, I enabled CSF and sending emails remained to work. However this morning I try to access rainloop and get "Can't connect to server" so back to square one where I would reissue an SSL to fix the email.. This really is doing my head in now :(.
  • Ok so I checked the mail.domain SSL using SSL Checker and cert appears ok so I have have decided not to reissue SSL right now.

If I run commands as advised previously "systemctl status dovecot" I receive the following. (I have replaced IP with "*").

  • I have noticed something new, it may or may not be related.

Upon remote SSH login I also see this below last login entry..

/dev/mem: No such file or directory
  • Sorry to post so many comments with allowing time for a reply.

I just updated CP then restarted the server, email is working once again! Hopefully, the issue has been resolved in the latest update : )
  • The postconf is not a problem you can ignore those

    For outlook change

    /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf

    change

    auth_mechanisms = plain

    to

    auth_mechanisms = plain login

I have no idea why your SSL keeps failing other than it could be an issue with your server

  • @hennaboy,

    Here we go again!

As of yesterday Rainloop signs in but when trying to send email I see error "can't connect to server"

For outlook I tried to change

    /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf

    change

    auth_mechanisms = plain

    to

    auth_mechanisms = plain login

So far still unable to send or receive emails.

Previously either issuing mail SSL or updating CP would resolve the issue but not this time.

I am at my end with this, would be great if someone could help to fix this, would be happy to hire someone to resolve and fix this, can anyone be recommended to do such a thing?

I do not understand why you are having to do all of this to have your email working.

epel-release will be updated installed automatically

There is no need to shutdown/reboot

pip upgrading has always been optional and does not impact what pip packages get installed

again no reason to update and reboot again

ssh port has no reflection on mail

mail SSL had it expired before issue?

  • No it had not expired, yes it is very strange I have to do steps which apprently do not affect email. I have forwarded all of this info onto hostinger to see what they come back with.

Also turns out my rdns is not seeing the correct mail.domain.com but domain.com instead.

I'll wait and see what they say.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply and for easing my mind on what I have actually done. Im glad this makes no sense and its not just me lol.
